Those who booked their holidays with travel firm Flyglobespan who went into administration at the end of 2009, can get holiday money back if they booked with a credit card.

This point was made in a question and answer feature relating to the collapse of the company, which has meant that many pre-booked flights and trips will now not go ahead.

It noted that under the Consumer Credit Act, those who used such means to buy their ticket can reclaim its cost as long as they spent over £100.

This differs from the situation for those who paid with visa debit cards - whose provider can try to recover the funds but are not guaranteed to succeed - and users of switch or maestro, who have no protection.

As credit cards offer this security, they may be useful to have, but customers may still wish to ensure they have the best rate available.

DirectLine Insurance notes that Flyglobespan is just the latest operator to fall victim to the economic downturn, with 60 firms around the globe collapsing in the past two years.
